Jeff D. Coates has been the associate dean for alumni and development at Duke Law School since April 2008. As the associate dean, Jeff oversees the Alumni & Development Office, managing all facets of the school's comprehensive advancement operation. Prior joining Duke Law School in April 2008, Jeff held positions at the University of Illinois College of Law; the University of Illinois Foundation; the Citizens Utility Board in Chicago; and the Illinois 7th Circuit Court. He holds a master's degree in legal studies from the University of Illinois and a bachelor's degree in the administration of justice from Southern Illinois University. Jeff is married to Karmen Coates, a probation officer with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. They have a three year-old son, Tristen. |

As Assistant Dean for Alumni & Development, Kate manages the Law School's team of Regional Directors of Development. She works closely with the Dean and the Associate Dean for Alumni & Development to plan and implement the Law School's principal and planned giving fundraising initiatives. A graduate of Duke University and the University of Virginia School of Law, Kate worked for several years for two major research universities, and also practiced estate planning and tax exempt organizations law, before joining the Law School in December 2004. She lives in Durham with her husband, Phil Buchanan, who serves as Duke’s Assistant Vice President for Gift Planning, and her three young sons—Blake, Holden and Graham. |

As Assistant to the Associate Dean and Director of Development, Dawn coordinates meetings, calendars, and travel for both deans. Her duties also include providing support relating to the administration and management of the overall Alumni and Development Office. She has been a member of the Alumni and Development team since February 2005. Dawn began working at Duke in 1984 in Human Resources and came to the Law School in 1998. She and her husband, Jack, live in Roxboro and have 2 grown sons. |
