Whether you are a native of Chile or traveling from abroad, your experience begins at the San Cristobal Tower, our host property. A special registration and help desk will be provided to attendees at the San Cristobal Tower on Sunday and Monday. Look for Duke Law School signs to direct you to these tables where you will collect your materials, including detailed instructions, directions, and information on all of the exciting events.

Tour and Dinner at the Santa Rita Winery
Afternoon/Evening
Enjoy a late afternoon trip to the Santa Rita winery, an amazing natural environment in the middle of a centenary park in the foothills of the Cordillera de los Andes, between vineyards and historic monuments. A welcome dinner at the winery will follow the tour.

This session will include a discussion with the dean and staff of PUC about the exchange program between Duke and PUC.

Guided Tour of Santiago

Sights include the Club Hípico, a beautiful horse-racing track in the ancient residential area of town; the Cousiño Palace, a furnished old mansion, now used as a monument and an official VIP residence; La Moneda, the government palace; Plaza de Armas, the main square; the San Francisco Church; the National Library; and the Santa Lucía Hill, where Santiago was founded in 1541.

Visit Chile’s main sea resort, Viña del Mar, and enjoy sights including the Quinta Vergara park, art museum, and ampitheater; Plaza de Vergara, the city center; Marga Marga Canal; the Fonck Museum, home to an original moai (monolithic human figure) from Easter Island; the Sporting Club race track; Wulff Castle; and the Flower Clock.

Travel to Chile’s main port, Valparaiso, and see winding narrow streets, houses and funiculars (cable railways) clinging to the surrounding hills. Also see Sotomayor Square; the statue erected to the heroes of the Naval Battle of Iquique (1879); the Naval Academy; Victorian residences; Victoria Square; and the Congress Building.

Also visit the bohemian, cobblestone neighborhood of San Telmo; Dorrego Square; the artists’ neighborhood of La Boca; the gentrified Puerto Madero area; the elegant San Martín Square; the traditional neighborhood of Palermo, including large parks, rose gardens, and lakes; and the fashionable Recoleta district, including South America’s most opulent and extraordinary cemetery, the resting place of Eva Peron.

Tour of the Argentine Side of the Iguassu Falls and Devil’s Gorge
Visit the upper and lower paths around the waterfalls surrounded by lush jungles with plush-crested jays, reddish-bellied parakeets, toucans, and coatis.

  • Upper path: A 45-minute walk with great views of the Two Sisters, Bosseti, Adam and Eve, Bernabe Mendez, Mbiguá and San Martín Falls.
  • Lower path: A one-hour and 30-minute walk for a view of the falls from above.
  • Devil’s Throat: Take a 4-kilometer train ride to the Devil’s Throat station, surrounding the upper part of the Iguazu River. Then take a walkway to the balcony of Devil’s Throat, Garganta del Diablo. See an impressive U-shaped, 82-meter-high, 150-meter-wide, and 700-meter-long cataract that marks the border between Argentina and Brazil.

  • Truck and Boat Tour of the Iguazú National Park (Argentine Side)
    By truck, explore 6 kilometers in the humid subtropical forest, as far as the banks of the Iguazú River, downstream from the falls. Board zodiac boats, cross rapids, and enter the Devil’s Throat canyon approaching the water falls.

  • Tour the Brazilian Side of the Iguassu Falls
    Hike along the catwalk, and enjoy panoramic views of the falls and a close-up of the Devil’s Throat. Take a panoramic elevator to the upper part of Iguassu Falls and view the upper Iguassu River from a lookout point.
