Responsibility in Law and Morals

This seminar examines the relationships between responsibility in the law and moral responsibility. Particular attention is given to the concept of excuses and defenses, and the roles therein of the concepts of act, intention, motive, ignorance, and causation.

Textbooks:
The main texts are H.L.A. Hart, Responsibility and Punishment and Morris, Freedom and Responsibility. Also read are writings from philosophers, legal theorists, and some cases.
