The Spring 2013 Guantánamo Defense Clinic will assist in the representation of Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, the named defendant in the military commission prosecution of the 9/11 attacks.

The course will begin with introductory class session, followed by a stand-down, an intensive training seminar, on Saturday and Sunday, January 19-20, 2013. At the stand-down, students will be introduced to the facts of Mr. Mohammad's case, as well as the legal issues and defense strategies that the clinic will address throughout the semester. The class will meet, thereafter, during its weekly class period (Thursdays, 10am-12pm), with additional team meetings scheduled as required.

Clinic students will work with clinic professors and defense counsel to construct case theories and to identify and analyze legal issues, and will produce legal memoranda (comprised of both legal analysis and exposition of potential defense strategies) and draft defense pleadings.

Each student will perform a minimum of 100 hours of work apart from meetings at the scheduled class time.

International Law OR National Security Law OR Military Justice. Consistent with North Carolina State Bar regulations, students must be in at least their fourth semester of law study to enroll in this clinic.
