Professional Development

This fall, the Duke Law D.C. Summer Institute will offer two courses intended as professional growth opportunities for lawyers and other practitioners working in Washington. The courses will cover such topics as the changing landscape of law practice, skills development, the lawyer's role in advising and facilitating corporate transactions, and more. Both courses will meet at the Duke in Washington office located near Metro Center at 1201 New York Ave., NW, Suite 1110, in Washington. Stay tuned for more details.

Shifting Gears: Practical Advice for Career Transitions or Reentering the Workforce Successfully

The course will feature conversations on how law practice has changed in the last 5-10 years; cutting-edge opportunities; new areas of practice; how to identify one's passion; and strategies for gaining skills or marketing existing skills.

Essential Business for Lawyers

The course will explore the business context in which lawyers function, as well as the lawyer’s role in strategy, risk analysis and management, and advising and facilitating corporate transactions. Breakout sessions will focus on specific skills and concepts related to accounting, finance, operations, negotiation, and corporate management.
