Mr. Wheeler is a partner in Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP, resident in the law firm's Raleigh and Winston-Salem offices.
Prior to joining Kilpatrick Townsend, Mr. Wheeler served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina (2002-2011), and Chief of its Economic Crimes Section (2009-2011). As a federal prosecutor, Mr. Wheeler led teams consisting of AUSAs and federal agents in the investigation, prosecution, and, when necessary, trial of complex financial crimes. He worked extensively on securities and investment crimes, computer data theft, tax fraud (including cross-border offenses), money laundering, and health care fraud.
Mr. Wheeler received his juris doctor in 1997 from Duke Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Duke Law Journal, and a member of the Dean's Advisory Council. In 1997, Mr. Wheeler also received an M.A. in English literature as part of the law school's joint degree program. He is a 1992 graduate of Williams College.
Following law school, Mr. Wheeler clerked for U.S. District Judge Susan Y. Illston in San Francisco. He was then in private practice with Cooley Godward LLP in Palo Alto, California, until returning to North Carolina in 2002 to work for the U.S. Department of Justice.
