Duke Endowment Gift

The Duke Endowment has given Duke Law School $2 million toward the renovation of its Law Library.  Russell M. Robinson ’56, chairman of The Duke Endowment, presented the gift to Dean Katharine T. Bartlett at a Law School alumni luncheon in Charlotte on Dec. 14.  This gift brings the amount The Duke Endowment has donated to the Law School’s current building campaign to $6.5 million.

Significant renovations will transform the Law Library into a facility that reflects Duke’s unique recognition of the need to integrate information retrieval, educational technology, and computing services.  These improvements, along with the construction of a new 4,200-square-foot atrium space, two new classrooms, and a new café, will begin in May 2007 and be completed by August 2008.  They represent the final phase of a three-year building project which also added state-of-the-art classrooms and seminar rooms, a 30,000 square-foot wing housing faculty offices and a dedicated law-firm like suite for many of Duke’s legal clinics, as well as  extensive improvements to the building’s exterior.

“These final improvements will transform the physical facility of the Law School into one of the very best in the country,” said Bartlett.  “For the Duke Law School community, the building will be a great place to learn and work, as well as a source of great pride.”

“The Law School could not be more grateful to The Duke Endowment for the support that has helped make this transformation possible.  In every area – professorships, financial aid, clinics, and building – the Law School has benefited from the support of The Duke Endowment.  We are enormously grateful for that support and interest in the Law School’s continuing welfare.”
