Women's History Month
Duke Law School celebrates Women’s History Month this March with an array of activities organized by the Women Law Students’ Association (WLSA), as well as other student groups and departments. The month’s events bring students, faculty and alumni together to discuss life as a female lawyer from both personal and intellectual standpoints.
Highlights to come include a March 24 talk by Professor Ranji Khanna of the Duke English Department and Professor Karen Engle of the University of Texas Law School called “What is ‘Right’? Feminism, Culture and the Struggle for International Justice”; a film night with Associate Dean Theresa Newman on March 24; a Faculty Lives in Public Service talk by Professor Carolyn McAllaster on March 25; a discussion with Professor Trina Jones on March 27; and a talk on April 1 called “It’s Not How Much You Make, It’s How Much You Keep: Managing Finances after Law School.”
Earlier in the month, members of the Women Judges Panel advised students on careers in the judiciary and gave personal accounts of their experiences at the bench. The seven judges to speak on March 6 included North Carolina Court of Appeals Judges Linda McGee, Robin Hudson, Marty Geer, and Ann Marie Calabria; Superior Court Judge Kim Taylor; and Durham County District Court Judges Anne McKown and Elaine O'Neal.
Earlier that day, alumna and author Julie Shields ’90 visited the Law School to discuss issues raised in her book, How to Avoid the Mommy Trap: A Roadmap for Sharing Parenting and Making It Work. Shields drew upon interviews with marital counselors, childcare workers, negotiation experts, employers, child development experts and parents to formulate strategies for balancing work and family.
In addition to these programs, WLSA created a Law Library display featuring books, quotes and facts from distinguished women in the law, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who will visit Duke Law School on March 18 as part of the Great Lives in the Law lecture series.
