Interlibrary Loan
Frequently Asked Questions: Duke Law Faculty
This information is for current Duke Law faculty and staff who wish to request books, articles or other library materials. Students, please visit the FAQ for Duke Law Students.
The Law Library will obtain through interlibrary loan (ILL) service: books, articles and other materials held at any Duke Library or any item you cannot find at a Duke campus library.
In addition, Law School faculty can request that any books, articles and other publications held in the Law Library be delivered to their offices or mailboxes.
Just contact the Reference Desk at ref@law.duke.edu or (919) 613-7121.
You can also use ILLiad, our automated ILL system, to place and track requests for materials. ILLiad offers you the ability to save your personal information and preferences, eliminating the need to fill out that information for each request. ILLiad also allows you to track the progress of outstanding requests, view request histories, and download electronically received documents for printing.
To register and make a request, log in to ILLiad with your NetID and password. There is an initial one-time registration form, which will save your personal information for future use.
Once logged into ILLiad, you may select the type of item which you would like to request (e.g., book, book chapter, article), and fill in the required information.
Requests are processed within one business day. Please provide as much information as you can in order to expedite processing.
Requested materials owned by libraries at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill should be available at Duke during the next business day, if the request is received before noon. Books requested from the NCCU Law Library and other Triangle-area libraries generally take 2-3 business days to arrive, because of the route taken by the libraries' delivery truck. Materials owned by libraries outside the Triangle area may take 7-10 days, but we can request expedited delivery by FedEx or other carrier for items that you need more quickly.
The loans of books to us by other institutions are governed by the owning libraries’ policies. The usual loan period is about 30 days. But, please let us know if you need an item for an extended period and we will work to either extend the loan or, where appropriate, purchase the item for our collection.
