Five Questions

Professor Scott Silliman's teaching and research interests focus on national security law, military law, and the law of armed conflict. Read his profile.

1. Quick bio: Hometown: Newton, Massachusetts
College: UNC Chapel Hill, 1965 (A.B. in Philosophy)
Law school: UNC Chapel Hill, 1968 (J.D.)

2. During my free time, I love to:
... listen to classical music, especially great choral pieces. I also very much enjoy jogging three or four miles each day during my lunch hour.

3. Favorite law school memory:
Teaching with and being mentored by the late Professor Robinson O. Everett. Robbie was instrumental in bringing me to Duke over 18 years ago, and I had the pleasure of co-teaching numerous classes with him from that time until his death two years ago. He was brilliant, yet humble; and the kindest and most considerate man I ever met in my life. He is sorely missed, not only by me but also by many of my faculty colleagues.

4. What are your interests or passions outside of teaching?
They focus principally on faith and family. My wife Bev and I are very much involved in our local church, and our worship and other activities there are an integral and very important part of our life. As to family, our five children have blessed us with fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild; and we delight in visiting with and being as supportive as possible of all of them.

5. What are you reading right now?
I just finished reading Lawrence Wright’s “The Looming Tower” and am now about half way through Peter Bergen’s very recent book “The Longest War”. Both books chronicle the history of al-Qaeda as a terrorist group.
