SJD candidate appointed as IP adviser in Brazilian congress

Pedro Paranaguá, a Duke Law SJD candidate, has been appointed as adviser to the ruling party in Brazil's House of Representatives, for digital media, Internet, copyright, cybercrime, telecommunications, and related matters. Paranaguá was selected after an open competitive process in which more than 140 candidates vied for the post.

Paranaguá will be responsible for drafting new bills and for proposing amendments to current bills in the Brazilian Congress' lower Chamber.

In addition to advising the Labor Party’s representatives in the House, Paranaguá will be responsible for receiving representations from industry and society stakeholders and for bridging the interests of the various parties in Brazil's Congress. He will also take part in information and technology commissions of the President's Office and the Justice Department.

Paranaguá is currently writing his doctoral thesis at on the Brazilian copyright reform process under the supervision of Jerome Reichman, Duke’s Bunyan S. Womble Professor of Law.
