Sources of Environmental Law

This course explores the political and theoretical context of environmental law. For roughly the first half of the semester, we will examine the historical sources of the major US environmental legislation, stretching back to the early nineteenth century, with special attention to the cultural attitudes and political movements that helped make environmental law. Then we will turn to philosophical questions about the values environmental law promotes, and those it should promote. Some time may be reserved at the end of the semester for presentation of student papers.
