790.01 Writing for Publication

In a collective "workshop" setting led by a writing instructor, students will produce a scholarly paper of publishable length, at least 30 pages. Participants are free to choose any topic that may be addressed seriously in an article-length piece. During the course, they will conduct research into and hone their topics, write and give each other feedback on first and second drafts of their papers, and, lastly, complete a "final" draft that should approach publishable quality. This course is intended to appeal to students who are interested in pursuing an academic writing opportunity apart from or in addition to those available through Duke's journals, seminars devoted to particular areas of law, or independent study. In particular, I hope it will attract students considering careers in academia and help them toward that goal by providing an opportunity to write a second work of scholarship while still in law school.
