524.01 Health and Medical Research for Lawyers

This one-credit advanced research seminar will introduce students to specific sources and strategies for researching a variety of health and medical legal topics, including the right to health care, medical malpractice, care for the elderly and disabled, medical privacy laws, pharmaceutical and medical device regulations, and medical ethics and experimentation. Particular focus will be placed on researching topics covered in Medicine and Law 512, including clinical research and informed consent, conflicts of interest, standards of care, access to scarce resources, and end of life medical/legal issues. This course will cover key primary and secondary sources for health and medical law research including statutes, regulations, and agency materials. Grading will be based on class participation, short in-class or take- home exercises, and a final take-home exam.Recommended to be taken in conjunction with: Medicine and Law (Law 512)
