Law Firm Challenge
The Law Firm Challenge seeks to strengthen the connection between Duke Law School and our alumni practicing in law firms across the nation.
Our goal is ambitious but simple: to have 100% of graduates working in firms with five or more alumni make a gift to the Law School by June 30, 2022.
The Law Firm Challenge is a friendly peer competition that encourages collective philanthropic support for the Law School which has an immediate impact on our students.
Annual giving by alumni helps ensure the continued excellence of the Duke Law experience and strengthens the community. Additionally, participation is an indication of alumni satisfaction and sends a message to the world about the quality of the Duke Law degree and alumni optimism about its future.
Law Firm Challenge Impact 2021
- 107 Firms participated in the challenge
- Over $2,000,000 raised for Duke Law
- Fast break firms: Williams & Connolly and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz

Yes. In fact, a majority of Top 20 law schools have a version of the Law Firm Challenge. There are probably non-Duke colleagues of yours at the firm who have a similar initiative going on right now with their law school.
No. As with many of our peer institutions, the Law Firm Challenge has become an annual part of our development programming
The Law Firm Challenge begins in January and concludes at the end of June, coinciding with Duke’s fiscal year.
If I’ve already made a gift to the Law School during the current fiscal year, will it count toward the Law Firm Challenge?
Yes. Any gift of any amount made to the Law School between July 1 and June 30 will be counted toward that year's Law Firm Challenge. The gift may be made to the Annual Fund or any other Law School gift designation.
If I made a gift to another school or unit at Duke University, but not to the Law School, will it count toward the Law Firm Challenge?
No. Gifts must be designated toward the Law School to count for the Law Firm Challenge.
Any firm with 5 or more alumni is invited to participate in the Law Firm Challenge. A full list of firms will be posted on the Law Firm Challenge website.
No. The goal of the Law Firm Challenge is participation. No dollar amounts will be listed or shared, only participation percentages
