“Contracts, Innovation, & Organization”

April 30 - May 1, 2010
Duke Law School
Duke University
Durham, NC

Convened jointly by Duke Law, Fuqua, and UNC law, this conference examines and evaluates the challenges of drafting, interpreting, and enforcing contracts that arise from a dynamic technological environment. Gathering leading scholars from law, economics, and political science, we ask how contract law, economics, and organizational theory can inform the challenges of committing to concrete and long-term contractual relationships in a dynamic technological environment. Conference sessions will focus on how technological dynamism affects contractual adjudication principles, how parties employ contracts to adapt to evolving technologies, and how contracting enables parties to pursue organizational structures appropriate for dynamic environments. The conference will conclude with a panel discussion on innovation policy and the role of government agencies in facilitating organizational change.

Preparation, Papers and Logistics

Our intention is to bring together scholars from economics, political science, and law to discuss important issues of information acquisition and disclosure and their impact on legal and economic institutions. We hope that speakers will feel free to present work in progress with an eye towards generating new insights and identifying promising areas for future research in the broader area of the role of information in law and economics. Invited speakers are requested to submit an unpublished paper or notes in advance to the conference website for circulation among attendees. We have no plans to publish the papers from the conference; however a live transcript of the conference will be distributed for the benefit of interested parties who are unable to attend.

The conference will be held at Duke University School of Law in Durham, North Carolina. Speakers will be housed at the Thomas Center at the Fuqua School of Business, right next to the School of Law. All speakers’ expenses to attend the conference will be reimbursed by the Sponsors.
