Current Issues in Law & Markets

The class will meet 6 times during the fall semester. Three of these meetings will be in connection with presently scheduled speakers (well-established corporate academics) who will visit the campus under the sponsorship of the Global Capital Market Center. These visitations have been scheduled for Thursday afternoons with the first being September 29th. Two weeks before the visit the students will be assigned readings related to the topic that will be the subject of the forthcoming speaker's presentation. The readings will include the paper of the presenter plus one or two other selected readings. We will then meet the week before the presentation to discuss the paper and more particularly the topic. Two days before the speaker's presentation students will submit a discussion paper (four to five pages in length) comment/critique of the speaker's paper. These comments will be provided to the speaker in advance of his/her presentation. The comments so provided will also be basis, along with classroom participation, for assessing the individual student's performance. One unit of credit will be awarded. Students will have the option of enrolling in the course again during the spring semester, for an additional unit of credit. Topics covered throughout the year most likely will include Regulatory Compliance, Odious Debt, Compensation and Pricing in the Mutual Fund Area, the Designated Underwriter Phenomenon, the Stickiness of Boilerplate Contract Terms, and Corporate Crime.

Please note that course organization and content may vary substantially from semester to semester and descriptions are not necessarily professor specific. Please contact the instructor directly if you have particular course-related questions.
