Ag-Gag Legislation: The First Amendment and Animal Agriculture

February 27, 2017 • 12:30 PM • Law School 3037

Ag-Gag legislation conceals abuse in animal agriculture by criminalizing whistleblowers who go undercover in factory farms to record footage of the atrocities taking place. These laws act as a barrier, preventing the public from learning the truth about what is happening in this industry. A number of states, including North Carolina, have effectuated these laws. Panelists will be Professor Jedediah Purdy, Professor Alan Chen (University of Denver Sturm College of Law), and Erica Geppi, North Carolina state director for the Humane Society of the United States. Please join Duke's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund for a panel discussion on this important and timely legal issue. Lunch will be served. Sponsored by DBA and Duke's Student Animal Legal Defense Fund Chapter. For more information, please contact Leigh Markowitz at leigh.markowitz@duke.edu.
