Islamic State and International Law: Part II

March 21, 2016 • 12:30 PM • Law School 3037

As part of the series of seminar entitled "Islamic State and International Law", this second seminar will first assess the legality of the US-led coalition airstrikes against IS in Syria and Iraq, with a particular emphasis on the UN Security Council Resolution 2249, unanimously adopted on November 20, 2015. The question of how to end impunity and bring to justice, at both the national and international levels, IS members suspected of having committed international crimes will then be raised and discussed as well as the question as to whether the international responsibility of territorial and third States providing direct or indirect support to IS could be engaged. This talk features Jean-Baptiste Maillart, visiting scholar at Duke Law School and Antonio Coco, visiting scholar at Harvard Law School. Sponsored by International Law Society. Lunch will be provided. For more information, please contact Cindy Li at zhiran.li@duke.edu.
