Online Hate: An Evil To Control or the Consequence of the First Amendment?
September 26, 2018 • 12:30 PM • Law School 3037
The Internet has revolutionized the way we share information and communicate with one another. At the same time, it has allowed racists, misogynists, xenophobes, and terrorists to amplify their messages and, in many cases, to bring harm to others. Please join us for a discussion with Christopher Wolf, co-author of Viral Hate: Containing Its Spread on the Internet (2013). Mr. Wolf, a Senior Counsel at Hogan Lovells US LLP and founder of the Anti-Defamation League Online Hate Task Force, will discuss the recent proliferation of online hate, the response of online platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and the constitutional limits of legal remedies. Mr. Wolf will also explore topics such as efforts to criminalize online hate, what individual users can do to in response to hateful communication, and the potential of counter-speech. Lunch will be provided. Sponsored by Intel, the Center on Law, Ethics and National Security, and the First Amendment Clinic at Duke Law.
