Terence M. (Terry) Hynes is Senior Counsel with Sidley Austin LLP in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He joined Sidley Austin after earning his juris doctor from Duke Law School in 1979.
Terry’s practice focuses primarily in matters involving the transportation industry. Over the past 30 years, he has represented railroads, ocean shipping companies, motor carriers and private equity firms in connection with mergers and acquisitions, asset-based transactions, commercial litigation and arbitrations, regulatory proceedings, homeland security and safety issues. He counsels buyers, sellers, and lenders in connection with sale transactions, carrier co-production arrangements, and rail corridor development projects involving both freight and passenger service. Terry has also served as lead counsel in several successful bankruptcy reorganizations involving major transportation firms. Chambers USA 2009 named Terry as one of the leading transportation lawyers nationwide.
Terry holds membership in the Association of Transportation Law, Logistics and Policy, and the Sections of Antitrust and Public Utility, Communications and Transportation Law of the American Bar Association. He is a member of the District of Columbia bar, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First, Second, Seventh and District of Columbia Circuits, and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He has written articles on transportation-related topics and has appeared as a speaker at transportation industry conferences in both the United States and Canada.
