The AIDS/HIV and Cancer Legal Project needs financial support as it continues to provide crucial legal help to low-income HIV-infected clients. Duke Law School pays 60% of the AIDS/HIV and Cancer Legal Project's operating expenses out of the Law School's instructional budget, but 40% of the annual operating budget must be raised from outside funding sources. These sources are critical to the ongoing ability of the AIDS/HIV and Cancer Legal Project to provide important experiential learning for its students and invaluable services to a community that otherwise could not afford to seek necessary legal assistance.

To date, the AIDS/HIV and Cancer Legal Project has received broad-based support from a variety of other funding sources, including AIDS United, the Ford Foundation, North Carolina State AIDS Care Unit, Fox Family Foundation, Triangle Community Foundation, Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, Bryan Family Foundation, Hillsdale Fund, Durham Merchants Association Charitable Foundation, North Carolina Bar Foundation, Mary Norris Preyer Fund, Community Foundation of Greensboro and the Elton John AIDS Foundation, as well as numerous churches, alumni and friends. We also need your support.

The Duke AIDS/HIV and Cancer Legal Project has provided much needed, typically hard to access, legal services for the HIV-positive, low-income clients treated at our clinics. The Project members are leaders in the promotion of social justice and the continued fight against discrimination.”

The Launch of an Endowment

Because of the generosity of the Fox Family Foundation and the Hillsdale Fund, the AIDS/HIV and Cancer Legal Project Endowment recently has been established. This is a critical step for the AIDS/HIV and Cancer Legal Project because the endowment will provide permanent funding for us that will grow over time. In order to build this resource and secure our financial self-sufficiency, we are launching a campaign to raise funds for this new endowment.
