An Adult at 16: The Age of Juvenile Jurisdiction in North Carolina

March 07, 2016 • 12:30 PM • Law School 3043

North Carolina is one of two states where 16 and 17 year olds are mandatorily charged as adults, regardless of the crime committed. This puts these teenagers in a dangerous position: minors are more vulnerable in adult prisons and have huge difficulties securing jobs or higher education after their eventual release. Join the American Constitution Society for a panel discussion of North Carolina's current policy and the ongoing efforts to raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction. The panel will feature Chief District Court Judge Marcia Morey, local juvenile public defender Eric Zogry, and UNC Law's Professor Barbara Fedders. Sponsored by ACS.
