Islamic State and international Law: Part I

February 01, 2016 • 12:30 PM • Law School 3037

The talk will address the exponential rise of Islamic State in the past 18 months, as well as its brutality and cruel practices, often filmed and diffused online, that have sparked fear and indignity in the international community. The Islamic State's existence has also raised numerous legal issues under international law, some of which will be addressed in a series of lunch-time talks throughout the spring semester. This introductory session aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the history, structure and functioning of Islamic State as well as pointing out the main differences with Al-Qaeda. Some legal questions, such as the issue of statehood, will also be addressed. This talk features Jean Baptiste Maillart, a visiting PhD student from the University of Geneva. Lunch will be provided. Sponsored by the International Law Society. For more information please contact Cindy Li at zhiran.li@duke.edu.
