October 31, 2019 • 12:30 PM • Law School 4042

Associate Justice Mark Davis LLM '18, of the Supreme Court of North Carolina will be speaking about his new book, A Warren Court of our Own: The Exum Court and the Expansion of Individual Rights in North Carolina. In this book, Justice Davis thoroughly analyzes the period between 1986 and 1995 when - under the leadership of Chief Justice Jim Exum - the Supreme Court issued numerous landmark decisions that had the effect of greatly expanding the individual rights of both criminal defendants and individuals bringing lawsuits against corporations and governments. The book compares the Exum Court with the legendary, and also controversial, era of the United States Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Earl Warren. Justice Davis furnishes biographical sketches of the justices on the Exum Court along with a behind-the-scenes look at how North Carolina's highest court actually functions. Lunch will be provided. Sponsored by the Bolch Judicial Institute and the Career & Professional Development Center. For more information contact Leigh Marquess at leigh.marquess@law.duke.edu.
