LLM Family Life at Duke Law

Main Content
Heading

Among the many reasons why students choose Duke Law for their LLM degree — small class size, the reputation of amazing faculty, beautiful campus experience — one reason that often does not garner as much attention is the family friendly environment found at Duke, and in Durham and North Carolina. In fact, hardworking attorneys often note they specifically chose Duke so they could spend more time with their spouses and children while pursuing their LLM degree at a top-ranked U.S. law school!

Duke University’s International Student Center (DISC) was created to provide educational programs, services and advocacy to the Duke global community on campus, as well as outreach to the greater Durham area; they excel at their mission! They help students and their families acclimate to Duke and Durham, and provide an extensive list of resources to assist in this effort.

Durham is consistently among the most celebrated mid-sized cities in the U.S. Centrally located in North Carolina, Durham offers short drives to both the beaches and mountains of NC, as well as to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, a well-connected hub providing easy access to U.S. and global locations.

Nicknamed the “Bull City” in the late 1800s when the Blackwell Tobacco Company named its product “Bull” Durham Tobacco, Durham offers a myriad of indoor, outdoor, and seasonal activities for families

Durham also enjoys the distinction of the lowest cost of living among cities which host peer school LLM programs. Durham's cost of living is less than the national average, with housing expenses about 27% lower and utility costs about 13% lower.

Families looking for quality education, natural beauty and a thriving economy with diverse opportunities are increasingly choosing North Carolina. North Carolina's population of just over 10 million makes it the ninth largest state in the U.S.

Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill comprise the "Triangle" region of North Carolina, which enjoys its reputation as a national research and technology hub.

Consistently ranked as a top vacation destination as well, North Carolina has something for everyone. Along with its breathtaking mountain views and stunning coastlines, the state proudly offers 41 state parks, 10 national parks, and four national forests!

Every year students welcome new family members during the LLM program, enjoying the renowned doctors and expertise of one of the nation’s top hospitals! (Durham is also known as The City of Medicine!)

One of the hidden gems of joining the LLM program is the family that students create during their time at Duke. Lifelong relationships are forged and LLM alumni enjoy access to a global Duke community of friends and colleagues. Lifelong relationships are also forged with Duke Law faculty and their amazing pets (like Buzz Metzloff).
