Towey led the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives from 2002 to 2006, also advising the president on church-state issues. Prior to his appointment, Towey spent ten years as a senior advisor to Senator Mark Hatfield (R-OR) and former Florida Governor Lawton Chiles, serving the latter as secretary of Florida’s Health and Social Services Agency. Towey also served as legal counsel to Mother Teresa for 12 years.
