5 Questions for Mariana Estevez JD/LLM '15
Estevez knew she wanted to practice law internationally, and Duke Law's JD/LLM program was a great step in that direction.
1. Where is your hometown?
I was born in Bogotá, Colombia, but I moved to Weston, Florida when I was 11, so I think of myself as having two hometowns.
2. Why did you choose Duke Law?
I chose Duke Law for professional, academic, and personal reasons. First, I knew I wanted to practice law internationally, and the JD/LLM program was a great step in that direction. Second, I valued the focus on teaching quality and student-faculty relationships that characterized my undergraduate experience, and I was looking for a law school that would replicate that. And finally, I had just spent four years freezing in Hanover, NH, and I liked the idea of escaping back into the sunshine.
3. Name one TV show you never miss.
Big Bang Theory. I embrace my inner nerd.
4. What are the three most-played songs in your music library?
These change periodically, but right now they are: Se Me Olvido by Gianmarco, Day That I Die by Zac Brown Band, and Slow Dancing in a Burning Room by John Mayer.
5. What’s the most recent book you read, and what did you think?
I read Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez on my way back from winter break. García Márquez is one of my favorite authors, and this was very typical of his work. You only need to read the first sentence (or the title) to know how the story ends. But every bit of information you get about how it happens generates a whole new set of questions. It doesn't matter that you know how it ends because what leads up to the end is incredibly interesting. It is so interesting, even, that you sometimes forget the ending or you find yourself hoping it will end differently. As far as I'm concerned, you can't help but love a book that kills its main character in a prepositional phrase introducing its first sentence and still manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for another 90 pages.
