LEAD Week and Orientations 2021

After nearly 18 months of virtual learning, the Duke Law community was happy to welcome students in person with over a week of orientation activities for new JD, LLM, SJD, and exchange students, as well as some returning LLM students and 2Ls.

LLM Orientation

The Law School also welcomed 70 LLM, SJD, and exchange students on Aug. 12, and their orientation activities ran concurrently with those of the JD students throughout the week. At times, both groups of students came together in service or in learning.

JD Welcome and Orientation

The Duke Law community welcomed 282 JD students on Aug. 16 for LEAD Week, a full week of activities designed to introduce them to life at the Law School and the principles of the Duke Law Blueprint.

Dean Kerry Abrams welcomed the incoming JD students.

Associate Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs Bill Hoye and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Lewis Hutchison both gave JD students a special welcome on the first day of in-person orientation, and Dean Hutchison lead them in reciting the Duke Law Pledge.

Students broke into sessions to meet their LEAD groups, and they attended sessions to learn about clinics and other opportunities at Duke Law.

Dedicated to Durham

Just before the week ended, JD and LLM students took part in a yearly service event, Dedicated to Durham, designed to give back to the community.

Students worked in community gardens, passed out vaccine information, sorted items for the homeless and other at-risk populations, and more.

2L Orientation

A special orientation was held for 2L students since they spent the entirety of their first year in virtual learning.
