Peter Kahn '76 to join Duke University Board of Trustees
June 25, 2009 — Peter Kahn has been appointed to a six-year term on the Duke University Board of Trustees. He is among four members newly appointed to the Board whose terms will begin July 1. James McDonald ’09, is among three newly-appointed Board observers.
A partner at Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C., Kahn has an active domestic and international litigation practice involving diverse and complex civil and criminal cases. He represents clients in federal and state courts at both the trial and appellate levels, in arbitrations and administrative proceedings, on Capitol Hill, and before foreign tribunals.
Kahn headed Duke Law School’s Board of Visitors (BOV) from 2001 to 2007. Katharine T. Bartlett, the A. Kenneth Pye Professor of Law and former Law School dean expressed deep appreciation for his leadership of the BOV over that period. “There is not an issue of importance to the Law School to which he has not added value,” she told Duke Law Magazine in 2007. Kahn also served as co-chair of the Law School Dean Search Committee that recruited Dean David F. Levi to Duke and currently co-chairs the School’s Law & Leadership Committee.
“Peter continues to demonstrate his incredible devotion to the Law School in any number of ways — by devoting his time, his insight and advice, and his support of scholarships, the Annual Fund, and the Heritage Society,” said Levi. “He will make an excellent member of the Board of Trustees.”
Kahn has been honored with the Charles A. Dukes Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to Duke University and the Dean’s Alumni Achievement Award for Extraordinary Service, Commitment, and Dedication to Duke Law School.
Kahn joins several other law alumni on Duke’s Board of Trustees, including Nancy Nasher ’79 and Xiqing Gao ’86. North Carolina Sen. Daniel T. Blue Jr. ’73, a Board member since 1995, will begin his tenure as chair on July 1. Christine Durham ’71 has just completed a six-year term.
As an observer, McDonald will attend meetings of the Board of Trustees and serve on committees. He is a “young trustee,” elected by the members of the Graduate and Professional Student Council to a two-year term — the first as an observer and the second as a voting Board member. A Denver native, he will begin a clerkship in the fall with Judge William Pauley III ’77 of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He will then clerk for Judge Milan Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
