World Human Rights Moot Court in South Africa
The second World Human Rights Moot Court will take place on Dec. 8-9, 2010, to mark International Human Rights Day. The competition is presented by the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
The first World Human Rights Moot Court was held in 2009 with the support of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In view of the success of this event, it was decided to continue with the competition.
A team of two students from your school – preferably one female and one male – is invited to submit heads of argument on the basis of a hypothetical case. Based on the assessment of the heads of argument by a panel of experts, three teams from each of the five UN regions will be invited to participate in person in the semi-finals and final round in Pretoria in December. Teams will be required to cover their own traveling and other expenses, although accommodation and local traveling costs as well as meals in Pretoria, will be covered by the organizers.
There is a participation fee of R5,000 for all teams who are selected for participation in the semi-finals and final round in Pretoria. Limited financial assistance can be requested by teams who are unable to pay this fee. The official languages of the competition are English and French, and there will be simultaneous translation.
The competition Web site containing the rules of procedure and the problem, as well as the registration form, is at www.up.ac.za/law. The Web site will be active at the latest from April 30. Registration forms must be received by May 5, 2010. Heads of argument must be submitted by July 15 by e-mail to cherryl.botterill@gmail.com. However, motivated requests for moderate extension of time will be considered if received before that date.
