This is a private event for the Duke Law community. Please join us for an evening with Prince Moulay Hicham Ben Abdallah for an engaging dialogue on the Arab World, which will encompass a discussion on the following: New regional conflict defines the Middle East in the wake of the Arab Spring. This new climate of violence reflects not so much ancient hatreds but the domestic imperatives of authoritarian regimes, as they struggle to deflect attention from structural problems in their society such as economic stagnation, youth resistance, and public demands for political voice. They have fueled new sectarian and geopolitical competition that has divided the region into warring camps, and amplified the violence and repression seen in countries like Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Egypt. Yet for most regimes, such a costly strategy of survival is not sustainable in the long term. The path forward entails encouraging openness, reforms, and innovation, which will require sustained efforts from all sectors of society. Sponsored by SOLIMENA, ILS and HRLS.
