Conversations in Human Rights: The Death Penalty in North Carolina and the U.S.

April 20, 2015 • 4:30 PM • West Duke 101

What is the status of the death penalty in North Carolina, and in the U.S. more broadly, and how is it changing? Join the Duke Human Rights Center at the Kenan Institute for Ethics for a discussion covering a broad range of topics, including lethal injections and the role of the pharmaceutical industry; its historical and contemporary racial symbolism in North Carolina, as well its persistent application to the most vulnerable in North Carolina, such as the mentally ill. Panelists include Professors Seth Kotch & Isaac Unah (American Studies and Political Science, UNC); Professors Corinna Lain and James Gibson (University of Richmond School of Law); Gretchen Engel (Executive Director, Center for Death Penalty Litigation); and Professor Jessica Namakkal as moderator (International & Comparative Studies, Duke). This panel is co-sponsored by the Duke Human Rights Center at the Franklin Humanities Institute and the Center for International & Comparative Law. A reception will follow.
