The Duke Center for Jewish Studies and the Duke Law School are proud to present a discussion by Professor Neil Siegel on the constitutional debate over state prohibitions on same-sex marriage. He will suggest that the debate is, at bottom, one about the authority of tradition - not whether tradition is static or evolving, but rather the direction and pace of its evolution. This lecture will suggest some connections between different approaches to the 14th Amendment in the area of gay rights and different denominations in the Judaic tradition. A reception will follow. Sept. 8 @ 5PM (FHI "Garage," Bay 4, Smith Warehouse).Professor Siegel served as special counsel to Senator Joseph R. Biden during the confirmation hearings of John G. Roberts and Samuel A. Alito. During the October 2003 term, he clerked for Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the U.S. Supreme Court. He also served as Bristow Fellow in the Office of the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice during the tenure of Solicitor General Theodore B. Olson, and as law clerk to Judge J.
