Why should I enroll?

The Duke Law Summer Institute on Law and Policy offers a unique opportunity to gain a more detailed and nuanced understanding of the constitutional, statutory, and regulatory frameworks within which much public policy is formulated and implemented in the United States.

Who should take these courses?

The Institute is particularly designed for recent college graduates and undergraduate students who are considering law school and/or a career in public policy, politics, and related fields, or any other professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge of the legal framework in which they work.  These two-week courses are intended to provide theoretical and practical insights into the intersection of law and policy, while also providing a glimpse of the benefits of a legal education and access to some of Duke Law’s best faculty.

What time commitment is necessary?

Participants are expected to attend and actively engage in each class, and to complete reading and writing assignments.  Faculty for the Institute recognize that most, if not all, participants are also employed in full-time positions outside of the program, and the workload will be appropriately tailored to the time constraints that participants will face.

When and where are the classes?

During each two-week session, classes will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, at either 5:45-7:15 p.m. or 7:30-9:00 p.m., with Wednesday evenings reserved for special programs. Classes will meet online.

Is housing provided?

For Summer 2024, all classes and special events will be held online.

How much does it cost?

Tuition for a single course is $600; for each additional course, tuition is $400.  The special programs on Wednesday evenings and course materials are included at no additional cost.

Am I guaranteed the class I want?

Your space in a specific course is not guaranteed until we have received your tuition payment.

Can I get credit?

Upon successful completion of a course, all participants will receive a certificate endorsed by the Dean and Faculty Director.  Some undergraduate or graduate students may receive academic credit for completion of this program, and interested students should consult their respective home institutions.

Who can enroll?

Current undergraduate students (i.e., those who have completed at least one year of undergraduate study), recent college graduates interested in pursuing a career in law or policy, current graduate school students in related policy areas, legislative and executive branch aides, professionals working in fields related to government and policy, and students and professionals from abroad are all encouraged to enroll the program.
