Hon. Sam Thumma (Duke LLM ’20) talks about writing his master's thesis on anti-lenity statutes

Judge Samuel A. Thumma of the Arizona Court of Appeals talks with Ann Yandian, program manager at the Bolch Judicial Institute, about his capstone thesis for Duke Law's Master of Judicial Studies program.

The rule of lenity and anti-lenity statutes have fascinated Judge Thumma since his time as a law clerk. As an LLM student at Duke Law, Judge Thumma had the opportunity to research the topic in-depth and work with a faculty advisor to publish a thesis on the rule of lenity and state anti-lenity statutes. Judge Thumma's research on anti-lenity statutes is forthcoming in the fall 2020 edition of the George Mason Law Review.
