Meet the JD class of 2028: Nimisha Pant
Nimisha Pant
CLASS OF 2028
Prior Education: Duke University ’21 (Bachelor of Engineering - Mechanical Engineering)
Hometown: Arlington, Virginia
Prior Work Experience: VB Spine (April-June 2025), Stryker (four years)
I was building an enjoyable and successful career as an engineer and then a project manager in new product development for a medical device company, Stryker. Becoming an attorney was not originally part of my plan. In my role, I frequently interacted with intellectual property (IP) lawyers as they advised the engineering team regarding restrictions placed on our designs by existing patents in the field. Through my work, I became increasingly interested in closing the gap between engineers and the understanding of IP, which sometimes limited innovation. I decided to change my focus and came to law school because I want to continue to drive innovation as I always have, by looking for creative solutions and driving efficiency in tedious processes, this time wearing the hat of a lawyer.
Why did you choose Duke Law School?
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Duke as an undergraduate student, especially because of the opportunities it created for interactions with classmates with very different backgrounds than mine. What drew me to Duke Law was that its smaller class size and section structure creates a perfect space to develop these tight-knit, diverse connections that enhance the learning environment and help me to grow into a thoughtful, open-minded, and effective lawyer.
Additionally, I benefited tremendously from being a mentee as well a mentor in my job, and I was impressed by Duke Law’s culture of mentorship from students and faculty alike. Something I heard consistently from Duke students and admissions members as I was deciding was that the faculty members at Duke Law are easily accessible and always willing to help students throughout their time at the school and beyond. Finally, as a Duke undergraduate alumna, I have not only benefited from but have also contributed to the strong connections within the Duke alumni community. I am excited to be joining Duke Law to become a part of the Duke Law alumni community, where I can continue to learn, grow, and eventually contribute as a mentor to those who come after me.
Are there student groups or other activities you’d like to get involved with?
I plan to be involved in Duke’s IP Society to share my end user perspective of IP, learn from other students interested in Intellectual Property and explore the various career paths in this legal area. I am also interested in writing for a student journal, such as the Duke Law Review, to both develop my legal writing skills and to stay informed on current developments in the legal world. I also hope to join the Duke Law Lifting Club to build a community in a workout space that I enjoy engaging in during my free time. Finally, I hope to be a part of Women Law Student Association and the Women of Color Collective to build relationships with and learn from other women in the Duke Law community.
How do you plan to use your law degree after you graduate?
With the rapid growth of AI in seemingly all aspects of society, I am increasingly interested in the impacts of AI on intellectual property. While AI opens opportunities for increased efficiency, there are growing cases of AI utilizing intellectual property without the proper permissions. I would like to get involved in protecting and litigating in matter related to AI infringement of intellectual property.
What do you do to relax outside of work or class?
One of my favorite hobbies is baking, especially trying out new recipes and getting family and friends to taste test. Recently, some of my favorite recipes I tried included a chocolate ganache raspberry cake, cinnamon rolls, and a lemon blueberry coffee cake. My favorite ways to relax are going on long walks or hikes, trying out new restaurants and coffee shops with friends, swimming, and spending time with dogs.
