I chose Duke because of its strong sense of community and the genuinely welcoming environment. When I was admitted, everyone I spoke to emphasized how friendly and supportive the law school community is, and how much they enjoyed spending time with their peers. I knew law school was going to be academically challenging, regardless of the school, so I really prioritized finding a place where I could grow intellectually while still forming strong friendships and connections. I admit, I may have thought it was too good to be true when I first made my decision, but my experience at Duke has only confirmed how special this community truly is.
How has law school shaped you?
My law school experience has made me more aware of the responsibility that comes with being part of the legal field and the impact our role can have on people’s lives. Just through my first year, I’ve come to see that legal knowledge isn’t purely academic, it has real consequences. This awareness has pushed me to think more carefully about the kind of lawyer I want to be and how I can use the law thoughtfully, ethically, and in service of others.

My advice if you are thinking about law school
Be true to yourself and to your goals. Really think about why you want to go to law school. It’s a huge commitment — intellectually, emotionally, and financially — and having a clear sense of your goals and values can help keep you grounded in the process. Also, don’t feel like you need to fit a certain “pre-law” mold; do things that genuinely interest and resonate with you. Law school is full of people with wildly different backgrounds and reasons for wanting to be in the legal field, and that’s what makes our community so great.
