Matthew (“Matt”) Boles joined the Duke Law faculty in 2024 as the Stewart Detention Center Clinical Fellow for the Immigration Rights Clinic. In this role, he supervises student clinical work for detained non-citizens at the ICE detention center in Lumpkin, GA.
Before joining Duke Law, Matt worked for the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, for more than six years. In his former role, Matt represented detained non-citizens in removal proceedings, affirmative applications with USCIS, advocacy with ICE, and represented several clients who are survivors of human trafficking. Matt serves on several committees for the GA/AL Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyer’s Association. He has written several law review articles about immigration law and language access/identity. Matt also regularly presents at conferences about immigration.
Matt received his J.D. and DCL from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University. While in law school, he was a Junior Associate for the Louisiana Law Review and Managing Editor for the Journal of Civil Law Studies. He was also involved with Jessup Moot Court. He received his B.S. in Public Relations, summa cum laude, and B.A. in Spanish, cum laude, from the University of Florida. He is admitted in Louisiana (2017) and Georgia (2023). Matt is an Eagle Scout (Troop 89, Bradenton, FL).
