Hayley Lawrence is a constitutional law and criminal law scholar whose research focuses on the Second Amendment and the intersection of cognitive science and criminal law. She joined the faculty of Duke Law School in January 2026. Her most recent works include Bruen’s Desuetude Problem, 98 Colo. L. Rev. (forthcoming 2027), Cumulative Burdens on Second Amendment Rights (with Joseph Blocher), 106 Boston U. L. Rev. 435 (2026) and Toxic Masculinity and Gender-Based Gun Violence in America: A Way Forward, 26 J. of Gender, Race & Law 33 (2023).
Before joining the faculty, Lawrence practiced in the litigation group at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington, DC and taught Scholarly Writing at the George Washington University School of Law. After law school, she clerked for Judge Robin L. Rosenberg of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Hayley received her J.D. and LL.M. from Duke Law School, cum laude. She served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Duke Journal for Constitutional Law & Public Policy. She received her B.A., with honors, from the University of Virginia.
