Rebecca Rich

Assistant Director of Legal Writing

Rebecca Rich is the assistant director of Duke’s legal writing program. She teaches Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing, as well as the Scholarly Writing Workshop and Contract Drafting for upper-level students. Rich has also taught in Duke Law’s Summer Institute on Law & Policy and Duke Law’s PreLaw Fellowship Program. She received the law school’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2020 and the Duke Law Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching & Learning in 2023. Rich is also active in the national legal writing community through participation in the Legal Writing Institute and the Association of Legal Writing Directors.

Prior to teaching, Rich practiced civil litigation with the Raleigh law firm Ellis & Winters LLP. She also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Patricia Timmons-Goodson on the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Rich received her J.D. with honors from Duke University School of Law, where she served as an Articles Editor on the Duke Law Journal. She received her B.A. from Goshen College.
