Zachary Smith
Senior Lecturing Fellow

Mr. Smith is a Partner and the Team Leader of Moore & Van Allen’s Bankruptcy & Financial Restructuring practice, based in the Firm’s Charlotte office.  He concentrates his practice in the areas of distressed situations and bankruptcy, representing lenders, special situation funds, debtors, and other stakeholders in in-court and out-of-court restructurings, including complex matters pertaining to Puerto Rico.  Recent representations include various stakeholders in connection with the Puerto Rico fiscal crisis, FirstBank Puerto Rico as senior secured lender in various chapter 11 cases in Puerto Rico and Florida, international technology start-up company Filip Technologies in chapter 11 cases in Delaware, and the United States Department of Treasury and the Presidential Task Force with respect to the restructuring of General Motors.  In October 2017, Mr. Smith was named to the American Bankruptcy Institute’s inaugural “40 Under 40” list, which recognizes 40 top restructuring professionals nationwide under the age of 40.  He is a senior lecturing fellow at Duke Law School, a lecturer in law at Boston University of Law, an advisory board member of the ABI’s annual Caribbean Insolvency Symposium, and a frequent author and panelist on restructuring matters.  He holds a J.D., cum laude, from Boston University School of Law, and an A.B., cum laude, from Harvard University.
