Historical Faculty

Hans Wolfgang Baade was a Duke Professor of Law from 1959 to 1970.   While at Duke he primarily taught and wrote in the fields of international and comparative law and conflict of laws.  He co-edited two books with Robinson Everett, one on academic freedom and one on African law.  Baade also served as editorial secretary of Law and Contemporary Problems from 1961 to 1965.

Baade became a member of the law faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 1971.

In addition to his rich career as a professor, scholar, and consultant, Baade was a member of the American Society of International Law, the American Foreign Law Association, the International Academy of Comparative Law, the American Arbitration Association, the German Associations of Teachers of Constitutional and International Law, and the German Society of Comparative Law. He was also a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Comparative Law, and a Director of the American Society of Comparative Law.  Baade was also editorial secretary of the Jahrbuch für Internationales Recht (Yearbook of International Law) from 1955 to 1960.

Baade became the Hugh Lamar Stone Chair Emeritus in Civil Law of the University of Texas-Austin School of Law, following periods as professor at the University of Kiel, Germany, Duke University, and the University of Toronto. He obtained his A.B. at Syracuse University in 1949, and law degrees at the University of Kiel Germany (J.D. 1951), Duke University (LL.B. and LL.M. 1955), and the Hague Academy of International Law Netherlands (Diplome de Droit International 1956).  Baade died in Austin in 2016.
