Historical Faculty

Edwin Constant Bryson was a Duke Professor of Law from 1947 to 1972, teaching courses on North Carolina Statutes and Decisions and North Carolina Practice. Prior to his professorship at Duke Law, he served as an assistant in the Duke University Legal Aid Clinic for sixteen years (1931 to 1947). He also served as Duke University Counsel from 1945-1971.  Students remember him as being especially helpful preparing them for the bar.

Throughout his career, Bryson was heavily involved with the Duke and Durham community. His memberships include serving on the Duke University Committees’ for Security, Patent Policy, Scholarship Study, Traffic, and Relations with the Bench and Bar and Student Affairs. He served as the chairman of the Duke Law School Building Committee, the secretary-treasurer of the Duke Law School Alumni Association, the Duke Law Representative (and VP) for the General Statues Commission of North Carolina, and the Duke University Representative on the Durham Citizens’ Advisory Committee. In addition, Bryson was involved with the North Carolina Bar Association’s committee on Courts and Civil Litigation, was a member of the Executive Committee of the National Conference of College and University Attorneys, and served as the President and as a member of the Board of Directors of Highland Hospital in Asheville, NC.

Bryson studied at both the University of North Carolina and Duke University, and earned his LL.B. from the University of Oregon in 1937.
