John de J. (“Jack”) Pemberton began teaching at the Duke Law School shortly after his graduation from Harvard Law School in 1947, and remained until 1951.  While at Duke, he taught courses on economic law and served as the associate editor of both Law and Contemporary Problems and the Journal of Legal Education.

Born in Minnesota, Pemberton received his BA from Swarthmore College in 1940 and his LLB from Harvard University in 1947. During his career he taught at both the New York University School of Law and the University of San Francisco, served as the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) from 1962-1970, and worked as an acting general counsel and regional attorney with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) throughout the 1960s-1980s. His legacy today is grounded in his work as a ‘civil rights crusader’. Pemberton passed away in 2009 at the age of 90.
