Meet the LLM class of 2026: Klara Jonsson
Klara Jonsson
CLASS OF 2026
Home Country: Sweden
Prior Education: Uppsala University '22, Master of Laws
Prior Work Experience: Associate, Mannheimer Swartling (Stockholm)
I wanted to pursue an LLM degree to further my knowledge of IP law. Within the IP field, I have primarily worked on patent litigation, and I wanted to broaden my knowledge, particularly in copyright law. I also thought that it would be interesting to learn about IP law from a US perspective, given that much of our legislation is influenced by US law and many of the clients of my law firm need to navigate complex IP issues in Sweden as well as in the US.
I also hoped to develop my soft skills further, which can be just as important as legal knowledge, and Duke offers many hands-on courses, such as negotiation. Additionally, I wanted to take the opportunity to experience something new, make memories for the future, and have an opportunity to grow not only professionally, but personally as well.
Why did you choose Duke Law School?
I chose Duke for a number of reasons. Firstly, I was impressed by how personal and involved all the staff seemed to be. I felt like they really cared about each of us on an individual level. For example, in the interview I got suggestions for both courses and activities that could suit my interests. Duke is also renowned for its strength in IP/tech, and there is even the opportunity to obtain a certificate in intellectual property, science and technology, which was definitely an important factor for me. I also liked the idea of experiencing American campus life, and I thought that Duke's strong campus life would be a great way to do that. Further, I thought that my quality of life would be higher than in many other places. I like being in nature, and the Duke campus and Durham are very green and full of nature. On the plus side was also that the cost of living is relatively low, which leaves more money for fun activities and exploring!
Are there student groups or other activities at Duke Law you’d like to get involved in?
I'm still undecided about which groups and projects I'd like to participate in. What I do know is that I'd love to take advantage of the opportunity to join some activities. There will be a pro bono fair as well as a student activities fair, which I am planning to attend to see which groups interest me. I am considering joining the Women's Law Student Association mentorship program, which provides an opportunity to connect with a second- or third-year JD student. We have also just started an LLM Running and Pastries Club to help us get to know each other better and explore the Duke campus and its surroundings.
How do you plan to use your LLM degree after graduation?
After finishing the LLM, I plan to take the New York bar exam in July. I am currently on leave from my position at the law firm Mannheimer Swartling, and I intend to return to Sweden afterwards to apply the skills I will have acquired during my time here. However, I do think that it could be interesting to gain some work experience in the US, so if I find a suitable opportunity, I will consider staying in the US for an OPT. My law firm also has a representative office in New York, so I will probably also look into the possibilities of a shorter placement there. Ultimately, I would like to transition to work as an in-house counsel, ideally within the IP field, and I definitely believe that a broader range of knowledge will be a valuable asset for that transition.
What do you do to relax outside of work or class?
Outside of class, I like to stay active by running and going to the gym. As I mentioned, I also like to spend time in the nature, so I am hoping to explore many of the hiking opportunities in Durham and North Carolina. I wouldn't necessarily say that I am a big sports fan, but I'm also excited about attending some sports games this year to experience the atmosphere. I also enjoy reading and cooking, so I am planning on doing those things whenever I need some downtime.
