Board of Visitors
Established in 1963, the Board of Visitors provides an opportunity for alumni, members of the judiciary, and friends of the Law School to participate and advise in decisions affecting the Law School. It is not the purpose of the Board to determine policy for the Law School. Rather, the Board’s primary responsibility is to collectively and individually advise and support the mission of the School and the Dean’s strategic priorities.
Fellow Duke Alumni and Friends,
Duke Law School is special to all of us, and I’m honored to give back a little to an institution that gave me so much. For more than fifty years, the Board of Visitors has served an important role in providing advice to the Law School Dean, helping the Dean achieve his or her objectives. As the Law School continues to evolve, and as Duke launches the MADE FOR THIS Campaign, it is critically important to have active alumni involvement. All of us want nothing but the best for our school. And each of us has an important role to play in shaping Duke Law School’s future.
I’m blessed to serve alongside the servant leaders on the Board of Visitors. I hope you’ll learn more about the various ways you can serve the Law School and the Duke community.

Meeting participation: Members are expected to actively participate in board meetings and discussions, and to serve on a committee or task force.
Philanthropy: Members are expected to generously support the Law School Annual Fund and a special project or priority that inspires them to make a major gift to the Law School, commensurate with their means. Examples include endowing a scholarship or professorship, or supporting a strategic initiative at the request of the Dean.
Engagement & Advocacy: Members are expected to attend and participate in Duke Law events, to serve as an ambassador for Duke Law School, and promote the institution to prospective students, potential employers/recruiters, and the community.
