AI Audits and Access to Justice Practicum

We work with partners to develop public learning about the use of AI and technology in courts and legal services.

In the practicum, students work with courts, legal services providers, and other partners to audit, test, and red-team AI tools; to study how AI is being used by people facing legal issues; and to develop governance standards for legal tech products.

We are currently accepting expressions of interest for partnerships. We prioritize work with courts, legal services providers, government funders or access to justice bodies, or access-to-justice relevant nonprofits.

While we are interested in a wide range of projects (including ones we have not thought of), we are especially interested in the following two areas:

Auditing, testing, and red-teaming. We audit, test, or red team launched or pre-launch tools designed to deliver legal information, advice, or services. We also study and audit tools that are meant to support court or legal provider staff (e.g., triage, document classification).
AI use in state/local courts. We are currently developing a project to study how self-represented litigants are using AI (and traditional legal technology) in state and local courts. We are especially interested in hearing from potential partner courts in the United States or Canada.
