Discover amazing art through a tour of exhibitions with a knowledgeable Nasher Gallery Guide. The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University is a major center for the arts in Durham and the surrounding region. Since opening in 2005, the Nasher museum has been dedicated to building a groundbreaking collection of contemporary art.

Alumni and guests will participate in a guided tour of the exhibition, Reckoning and Resilience: North Carolina Art Now. This exhibition brings together 30 emerging and established artists working across the state. With media ranging from traditional drawing, painting, sculpture and photography, to ceramics, textiles, performance and experimental video, the selected artists explore themes surrounding historical and current events, identity, loss and remembrance, and trauma and healing. After two years marked by a global pandemic, political chaos, ongoing deadly racism and environmental injustice, the need to reexamine ourselves and the world around us has never been more urgent. The artists included in this exhibition invite us to reckon with hard truths, seek healing in collective reflection, and demand transformative action.

Shuttle departs from Science Drive Entrance of Duke Law School at 3:45 p.m. and tour begins at 4:00 p.m.

Standing at 210 feet in the center of campus, of the original buildings at Duke University, the Chapel was planned first and built last. The architectural style of the Chapel is English Gothic, but it is modeled upon no particular cathedral, college chapel, or parish church. The architects of the Chapel were Horace Trumbauer of Philadelphia and his chief designer, Julian Abele, America’s first Black architect of renown. The cornerstone was laid October 22, 1930, and construction of the Chapel required more than two years. It was first used at commencement in 1932 and was formally dedicated June 2, 1935.

Looking Beyond the Easel with Professor Deborah DeMott

Should a visual artist share in the gain when a collector sells a work for more than its purchase price? Artists based in major art-market jurisdictions—with the exception of the United States and China—now have statutory resale or royalty rights (typically capped at a relatively low amount). Debates over resale rights have been shaped by often-unstated assumptions about the creation of works of art, their critical and historical assessment, and their reception in art markets that ignore the roles of institutions in defining artistic achievement, instead treating outcomes as the necessary consequence of an immutable order. Distinct institutions can reinforce each others’ effects to the disadvantage of artists who are women; the vulnerability to error of interlocked institutions can assure that artists of merit remain in obscurity. Focusing as well on the context in which artists work encompasses the role that an artist’s family and life partners in particular in the artist’s ability to realize work. Although artists’ life partners are not co-authors of work, they make sustained contributions to the artist’s ability to work. As a consequence, a resale right should not terminate with the artist’s death. Join Professor Deborah DeMott for a conversation as we discuss these questions and more.
