Free Speech and Content Moderation on Social Media

February 12, 2020 • 12:30 PM • Law School 3041

In the increasingly polarized political environment we find ourselves, calls for censorship have never been louder. Social media platforms present the technology to silence our opposition with unprecedented speed and totality. But how much of our free of speech should we trade for fighting hate speech? Professor Nadine Strossen, former President of the ACLU, and Professor Nicole Ligon, Supervising Attorney of the Duke Law First Amendment Clinic, will discuss the importance of preserving our fundamental freedom of speech in the face of the quickly opening Pandora's box of social media content moderation. Lunch will be provided. Sponsored by the Duke Law Federalist Society, American Civil Liberties Union, American Constitution Society, Duke Law & Tech Society, First Amendment Clinic, Jewish Law Students Association, and the Women Law Students Association.
